Let Patients Tell The Truth: Urge your Congressional Representative to Co-Sponsor H.R. 4272, The Steve McWilliams Truth in Trials Act

February 09, 2010 Subject: Let federal defendants tell the truth! I am writing today to urge your co-sponsorship on HR 4272. Officially dubbed "The Steve McWilliams Truth in Trials Act", this legislation guarantees defendants the right to introduce evidence demonstrating that the marijuana-related activities for which the person stands accused were performed in compliance with state laws regarding the medical use of marijuana. H.R 4272 is compassionate, common sense legislation that offers a resolution the conflicting federal and state laws on a very important medical issue. Most importantly, it permits federal defendants the right to mount a defense and tell jurors the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! The introduction of this bill comes barely a week after the release of a new national Gallup poll in which 78% of respondents supported "making marijuana legally available for doctors to prescribe in order to reduce pain and suffering." Moreover, numerous medical organizations remain steadfast in their support of medical marijuana including, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Public Health Association, Kaiser Permanente, and several state medical associations including the Texas, California and New York State Medical Associations. The bottom line is marijuana is medicine. It is time that Congress act to protect sick and dying patients from the threat of federal arrest and prosecution. I am not asking that you support medical marijuana, just that you set aside your preconceived notions in order to do the right thing: Let patients tell the truth!
